A free tier is a capability probe, not a sales funnel

Free tiers in this category have a bad reputation and mostly deserve it: watermarks, 128 pixels, one output, then the paywall.

There is one thing they are genuinely good for, and it is more important than it sounds.

Finding out whether your face is a hard case

These models do not fail uniformly. They reproduce well what the base model saw a lot of and average what it saw little of. Strong prescription glasses, tightly curled or high-volume hair, deeper skin tones, pronounced asymmetry.

You cannot learn this from a product page, because the examples on a product page are the successes. You learn it from your own face, and that costs ten minutes.

Whether a genuinely free option exists is a fair question with a more nuanced answer than either side of the marketing gives, and a free entry point for the LinkedIn case is the narrowest version of the test.

The second free test, which most people skip

Deliberately vary your source photographs. Different days, different clothes, different light.

The standard mistake is fifteen images from one afternoon in the same shirt. The model has no way to know which consistent things are you and which are Tuesday, so it learns the shirt as part of your identity and the outputs come back oddly attached to it. Then people conclude the product is bad.

This single input decision moves results more than the difference between products does, and it is free.

What the free tier will not tell you

Whether forty of these will look like a set. Individual quality and cross-person consistency are different properties, and the second only shows up at volume.

That is where free stops being informative, not because of the business model but because the property being measured is different.

Before generating, check whether you need to

A large share of "my photograph doesn't work" is a crop or a background problem with a photograph you already have. Head cut at the top, framed too wide, or a subject that merges into the wall once the image is small.

An analyser that scores the actual variables settles that in a minute: hair-to-background contrast, crop distance, light direction, eye height. Very often the verdict is that the photograph is fine and the framing is wrong.

The full set of things that run without an account is at free tools.

And on comparisons

We publish head-to-heads, including ours against HeadshotPro. We are a participant, so read the method rather than the verdict: whose faces, how many source photographs, and when it ran. Those three move results more than the products do.

The twenty-minute version

Hardest face you have access to. Fifteen photographs across four days. Free tier. Then ask someone who knows that person whether it still looks like them.

If it does not, no product in this category fixes that today, and you have saved yourself the money.
