The background is a separate purchase, and almost nobody treats it that way

People choose a portrait by looking at the face. Most of the failures are behind it.

Why it is invisible when you choose

At full size a dark background behind dark hair reads as considered. Scale it to a profile-sized thumbnail and the head loses its outline entirely — a silhouette with features somewhere inside and no boundary.

The failure is undetectable in exactly the conditions people use to select, and total in the conditions where the image is seen. That is why it is the most common problem in this whole subject and the least discussed.

The fix is not white

It is separation from your hair colour, which is a different colour for different people. Light hair needs a mid or dark background; dark hair needs a lighter one. Blanket advice to use white is wrong for about half of people, and for the other half produces a floating, cut-out look.

Choosing a background properly treats it as a contrast decision, which is the right frame, and the fuller guide covers the variations.

The second-order variable

Distance. A metre or more between you and the wall throws it slightly out of focus and removes texture that competes with your face. Standing against the wall does the opposite and is what most people do.

The specific case that has its own rules

Residency and medical application photographs come with actual specifications — often a stated background colour and crop — which turns a taste decision into a compliance one. Worth checking the requirements before producing anything, because a rejected photograph costs an application cycle.

Where the generation step comes in

If you are generating rather than photographing, the background is one of the things the system decides for you, which is either convenient or a loss of control depending on the brief. How the generators work covers the mechanics, and the professional-grade version covers what the paid tiers add.

The thing worth knowing: for a group, the background must be identical across everyone, which means the per-person optimisation described above is exactly what you do *not* want. Individual and team briefs point in opposite directions here.

On the size of the category

For the numbers rather than the claims, the market research covers how fast this grew and what it did to prices. The short version: image quality plateaued, prices fell, and the remaining competition is on consistency rather than realism.

The test

Scale your image to forty-eight pixels. If your head has no edge, it is the background — and it was the background all along.
