The background decides more of your profile photo than your face does

Ask someone what is wrong with their profile photograph and they will talk about their expression. Look at the actual failures and most of them are behind the person, not in front.

Why the background wins

At full size a dark background behind dark hair looks fine — moody, even. Scale it to forty-eight pixels and the head loses its edge entirely. You get a silhouette with features somewhere inside it and no clear boundary.

This failure is invisible in exactly the conditions people use to choose, and total in the conditions where the image is actually seen.

The fix is not white

It is separation from your own hair colour, which is a different colour for different people. Light hair needs a mid or darker background. Dark hair needs a lighter one. Generic advice to use a white background is wrong for roughly half of people and produces a washed, floating look for the other half.

Which backgrounds work for this context goes through the options, and the useful part is that it treats it as a contrast decision rather than a taste one.

The second-order effect: distance

A metre or more between you and the wall throws the background slightly out of focus and removes texture that would otherwise compete with your face. Standing against the wall does the opposite.

Where industry conventions come in

They are real, and narrower than general advice suggests. Styles by industry covers the differences: law and finance sit at the restrained end, creative fields at the other, and healthcare has the hardest brief because it needs competence and approachability simultaneously.

Getting this wrong is not fatal but it is noticeable — a very warm portrait reads as odd in a legal context in a way it would not anywhere else.

The core requirements and the professional version both come down to the same three: hair-background contrast, tight crop, frontal light. None depends on the camera.

Taking it yourself is entirely feasible, and the error to avoid is distance — at arm's length perspective enlarges your nose; two metres back with zoom fixes it.
