The photoshoot that is not a photoshoot

"Business photoshoot" suggests a day, a location and a photographer. For most companies below a few hundred people, what is actually needed is narrower and less cinematic.

What the brief usually is

Forty portraits that match, plus perhaps a handful of workspace images. A business photoshoot at that scale is mostly the first thing, and the second thing gets used once on a careers page.

That is worth knowing before quoting, because the portraits are the part that has to be repeatable and the workspace images are the part that does not.

The requirement that is easy to state and hard to meet

Same crop, same background, same colour temperature, across people with different hair, different heights and different colouring. Corporate portraits as a category is defined by this constraint rather than by any quality bar.

Optimising each portrait individually — the background that best suits each person's hair, the crop that best suits their proportions — produces a *worse* page. This is counter-intuitive and it is the single most common brief error.

The background is the specification

Not a taste decision. A background that contrasts with dark hair does not contrast with light hair, so "use grey" is under-specified for a group. The range of options matters more here than for an individual, because the same background has to work across everyone.

The practical resolution is usually a mid-tone with enough separation at both ends, chosen once and written down.

What the images are actually for

Less than people assume. Using a portrait across an online presence is realistic about it: the same image goes on the company page, the professional network, and occasionally something printed, and the reuse is worth more than optimising any single placement.

The under-discussed benefit is recognition. The same face across five places is worth more than five better faces in five places, and it costs nothing.

Where the individual case reconnects

What a generator is used for beyond the company page covers the personal end. The overlap is smaller than vendors imply: an individual optimises for their own face, a company optimises for the set, and those are different jobs with different right answers.

Before booking anything

Write down three lines: background colour, crop ratio, and whether people look at the camera. Most companies never do, and that omission — not budget, not vendor choice — is why the page drifts back into four styles within two years.
