What a corporate portrait is actually a photograph of
Look at the team page of almost any company past thirty people. There are three or four styles coexisting: a grey-background group, a white-background group, two people cropped out of an event photo, and someone using a holiday picture.
Nobody chose that. It is what happens when hiring does not stop for the photographer.
The structural problem
A session is an event. A workforce is a flow. Every person who joins after the session fails to match, and within eighteen months the page returns to the state it was in before.
The second half of the problem is the absentee. Someone is always on leave, travelling or remote, and that person keeps their old photograph indefinitely.
What it looks like when it works
Worked examples are more useful than rules here, because the thing being judged — whether a set coheres — is hard to specify and obvious to see.
The pattern in the ones that work is unexciting: identical crop, identical background, identical colour temperature, and variation only in the faces. That is the entire brief. The general treatment covers the conventions.
The photographer question
Still the right answer sometimes, and worth being clear about when. What a corporate photographer actually provides is not equipment — it is a person watching who tells you your chin is slightly too high, and the ability to direct forty people through the same setup in one day.
The first of those is genuinely irreplaceable. The second is the part that breaks, because the day never contains everyone.
The checklist that prevents most failures
A pre-rollout checklist is worth going through before spending anything, and the highest-value item is the dullest: count how many people already have a usable photograph that is simply cropped wrong. It is often half, and it turns a forty-person job into a twenty-person one.
The two ways to source them
The general company approach and the generated route differ less than the marketing suggests on quality, and considerably on repeatability.
The question that decides it is not which produces better images. It is whether you can add the forty-first person in a year and have them fit — and if the answer is no, you have bought a snapshot with an expiry date.
The specification to write down
Background colour, crop ratio, and whether people are looking at the camera. Three lines. Most companies never write them down, and that omission is why the page drifts.
