One: fix the photo you already have

The most underrated option and the only free one. About half the portraits people describe as bad are actually fine photographs with the wrong crop — too much shoulder, head too small, everything below the collarbone eating the frame.

Five minutes of cropping, no new photograph, no cost. Worth ruling out before anything else.

Two: photograph yourself properly

Also free, and better than expected if you get three things right: distance, light and background. Distance is the one people miss — at fifty centimetres the perspective enlarges your nose and shrinks your ears, and stepping back two metres with zoom removes the effect entirely.

A window as the light source, not the ceiling light. A wall with some distance behind you. That is most of it.

Three: generate a set

The case for this is not quality, it is repeatability and speed. Where to find results that actually look real is the specific version of the question, and one product walkthrough shows the process end to end.

The preparation that matters is not the tool. It is the source photographs: different days, different clothes, different light. Fifteen from one afternoon in one shirt teaches the system that the shirt is you.

Four: book a photographer

Still the right answer for one important portrait, and the reason is not equipment. It is a person watching you and saying that your chin is slightly too high. That feedback is the actual product of a session and nothing else reproduces it.
